Privacy and personal data

What Poetry Codex keeps about you, why, where, for how long, and how to have it deleted. Last updated 15 October 2026.

Who is responsible

Poetry Codex (poetrycodex.com) is run by an international group of academics, its editors, who are the data controller for the purposes of the data-protection laws that apply (among them the EU's GDPR and the KVKK). Write to admin@poetrycodex.com about anything on this page.

Reading without an account

You can read the whole archive without signing in. The site then keeps nothing about you: your shelf, your notes, your place in the long works and your settings stay in your own browser and are never sent to Poetry Codex. To deliver the pages, Cloudflare (which hosts the site) handles the technical data every website receives, such as your IP address, and counts visits without cookies (Cloudflare Web Analytics). The typefaces come from Google Fonts, which also sees your IP address when your browser fetches them.

With an account

If you choose to sign in with Google, Poetry Codex keeps:

Poetry Codex never receives your Google password. It does not use your data for advertising or profiling, does not share or sell it, and does not send you email. The only purpose is to keep what you save and show it to you on every device where you sign in. The legal ground is the service you ask for.

Readings with the Codex

When you ask the Codex for a reading, an answer or a gloss, the text of the poem and your question are sent to its reading engine, which runs on Cloudflare and uses an AI model from Anthropic to write the answer. They are not linked to your account there; the answer is kept in your browser, and in your account if you are signed in, so that you can read it again.

Where it is kept

Accounts are kept in a Cloudflare D1 database in Cloudflare's Western Europe region; Cloudflare, Inc. is a company in the United States. Signing in is done by Google LLC, also in the United States. These servers may be in another country than yours: your data is transferred to them under the providers' data-protection terms, and by signing in you give your explicit consent to this transfer.

For how long

Until you delete your account. A signed-in browser's session ends after 180 days, or when you sign out. When you delete your account it is removed at once; the database's automatic backups, which Poetry Codex does not use for anything else, are gone within 30 days.

Cookies

One cookie, pc_session, and only when you are signed in: it keeps you signed in and is readable by the site's server alone. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

Your rights

You may ask whether data about you is processed, what it is and why, to whom it is transferred, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted; you may object to a result that goes against you and ask for compensation for unlawful processing. You can delete your account yourself at any time on the account page, or write to admin@poetrycodex.com; requests are answered within 30 days. You may also complain to the data-protection authority where you live.
