As I was going by Charing Cross
From The Nursery Rhymes of England, collected by J. O. Halliwell (London: Warne; first ed. 1842; this printing 1886)
As I was going by Charing Cross,
I saw a black man upon a black horse;
They told me it was King Charles the First;
Oh dear! my heart was ready to burst!
Codex Note
Halliwell's class: Historical. [The following is partly quoted in an old song in a MS. at Oxford, Ashmole, No. 36, fol. 113.]
