The Straying Sheep

by Anonymous (Irish Gaelic, later) c. 13th–18th century

Translated by Eleanor Hull (1913) · From The Poem-Book of the Gael (1913)

Religion

Fair Jesu, guide Thy straying sheep
Along the fragrant valleys,
And where the meadow-grass grows deep,
Guard from the wild wolf's sallies;
No sickness unto death be theirs,
But sickness unto healing,
Our sickness be for love to Thee
O King of all the living.
