Love

Hopeless Love

by Anonymous (Irish Gaelic, later) c. 13th–18th century

Translated by Eleanor Hull (1913) · From The Poem-Book of the Gael (1913)

Love

Since I know
Hopeless of thy love I go,
Since from me each dear delight
takes flight:

Ere we end
Ways we might together wend,
Ere the light from out mine eyes
dies:

Give some sign
One regretful thought is thine,
Lest I count my story told,
overbold.

For I hold,
Time may yet some joy unfold,
Joy such as the lifelong blind
find;

If entwined
In the fabric of the mind,
Dwells the memory of thy tear,
dear!
