Riddle 70

by Anonymous (Old English) c. 7th–11th century

Translated by Benjamin Thorpe (1842) · From Exeter Book Riddles (selection)

Arts & Sciences

The thing is curious
to those who its ways know not,
it sings through its side,
the neck is crooked,
cunningly wrought ;
it has two shoulders,
is sharp on the blade-bones ;
its form
so curiously
in your way stands,
high and bright of countenance,
for use to men.
