Book VI, 257

by Antiphilus of Byzantium 1st century AD

Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. I, 1916)

Religion

Who filled me with the gifts of Demeter, the amphora fashioned for Bacchus, the recipient of Adriatic wine sweet as nectar? Why should he grudge me to Bacchus, or what scarcity was there of proper vessels for corn? He insulted both divinities ; Bacchus has been robbed, and Demeter does not receive Methé I into her society.
