Love

Sleeping Eyes

by Philip Ayres 1638–1712

From Lyric Poems, Made in Imitation of the Italians (1687)

Love

FAIR Eyes, ye Mortal Stars below,
Whose Aspects do portend my Ill!
That sleeping cannot chuse but show
How wretched me you long to kill;
If thus you can such Pleasure take,
What would you, if you were awake?
