On a seared Conscience: to a damnable Swearer
From Two Bookes of Epigrammes, and Epitaphs (1639), Book II
Social Commentaries
It is affirm'd, that where the Devill layes
His claw, and markes damn'd witches for his owne,
That part growes stupid, and no sense bewrayes,
Nor bleeds, though pierc'd with Needles to the bone:
Thy Conscience so, which hottest Hell did seare,
Is senselesse growne, nor wounds nor blood doth feare.
