Psalm CXIV
From Paraphrase on the Psalms of David in Metre (1692)
When Israel out of Egypt went,
And Jacob's House by God's strong hand
From under those strange Task-masters,
Whose speech they did not understand.
Judah he did his Sanctuary,
And Israel his Dominion make;
The Sea did see, and fled away,
And Jordan's stream was driven back.
Like Rams the mountains, and like Lambs
The little hills skipt to and fro:
O Sea, what made thee thus to flee?
Jordan, why didst thou backward go?
Ye mountains great, what was the cause
That made you thus to skip like Rams?
Ye little hills, wherefore was it,
That you did skip like playing Lambs?
Tremble, O earth, before the Lord,
When Jacob's God his presence shows;
Which turn'd the Rock to water-pools,
By whom the flint like fountains flows.
