Psalm CXXIV

by Richard Baxter 1615–1691

From Paraphrase on the Psalms of David in Metre (1692)

Religion

Had not the Lord been on our side,
His Israel must [now] confess:

Had not the Lord been on our side,
When men [of blood] sought our distress.

Then they had swallow'd us alive,
When [their hot] wrath against us flam'd;

The waters of their furious rage
Over our [sinking] souls had stream'd.

Then had these proud insulting waves
O'rewhelm'd us with their [cruel] Laws:

Blest be the Lord, who made us not
A prey unto their [greedy] jaws.

Our soul like an entangled bird
Escap'd out of the [Fowler's] snare;
The snare our pow'rful Lord hath broke,
Our [trembling] souls escaped are.

Our only help we find doth stand
In the [great] name of our [great] Lord,
Whose power made the glorious heav'ns,
[The earth] and all things by his word.
