Love

Epigram XXV. On a Spartan Lady

by Alexander Brome 1620–1666

Translated by Alexander Brome (1664) · From Songs and Other Poems (1664)

Love

A Spartan Lady bravely stew her son,
Because she saw him from the battail run;
Thou canst not be (quoth she) a Spartan known,
Unless thy valiant mind declare thee one.
