Death & Dying

Epigram 16: By all the gods, I ne’er had known

by Callimachus c. 310 – c. 240 BC

Translated by H. W. Tytler (1793; Bohn 1856) · From Works of Callimachus (Tytler, 1793)

Death & Dying

By all the gods, I ne’er had known
Who this Timonoé was,
Had not her father’s name been shown
In monumental brass.
Methymne too, the city’s name,
Engraven on her tomb
With old Timotheus, gives to fame
Her much-lamented doom.
Though time will some reliefmpart
To soothe a father’s woe,
Deep sorrow rends her husband’s heart,
His tears for ever flow.
