Verses on the Queen

by Thomas Campbell 1777–1844

History & Politics

Victoria’s sceptre o’er the deep
Has touched and broken slavery’s chain;
Yet, strange magician! she enslaves
Our hearts within her own domain.

Her spirit is devout, and burns
With thoughts adverse to bigotry;
Yet she herself, the idol, turns
Our thoughts into idolatry.
