On Ma-wei Slope

by Chēng T’ien AD 656–698

Translated by Witter Bynner and Kiang Kang-hu (1929) · From The Jade Mountain (1929)

History & Politics

When the Emperor came back from his ride, they had murdered Lady Yang—
That passion unforgettable through all the suns and moons.
They had led him to forsake her by reminding him
Of an emperor slain with his lady once, in a well at Ching-yang Palace.
