The Deity

by John Clare 1793–1864

From The Rural Muse (1835)

Religion

Omnipotent Eternal! — known Unknown!
The world whose footstool is, the heaven whose throne!
Who is it spreads this glory all around
Star-studded skies, and flower-bewildered ground?
Who is it speaks those wonders, and they be?
Who is it, dread Omnipotent, but thee!
Thou on the sun didst breathe thy power's desire,
And instant kindled his eternal fire;
Thou badest the unpillared skies their arch expand —
Thy breath is underneath them, and they stand;
Thou badest the seas in tides to rise and fall,
And earth to swell triumphant over all.
Thy mercy, co-eternal with thy skill,
Saw all was good, and bids it flourish still!
