Death & Dying

Epigram 93. An Epitaph on my most honour'd Kinsman Colonel Ralph Sneyd, who dy'd in the Isle of Man about the 40th year of his Age

by Sir Aston Cokain 1608–1684

From A Chain of Golden Poems (1658)

Death & Dying

Here lyes a body that gave Lodging to
A Soul as noble as the world did know;
It was well-organ'd, handsome, manly, and
Of equal structure to the best o'th Land:
Yet was unworthy of the Soul was given,
And therefore dy'd cause that fled back to Heaven.
Here Colonel Ralph Sneyd doth lie; In brief
The joy of mankind living, now the grief.
