Love

Love, whereof purest light the shadow is

by Mary E. Coleridge 1861–1907

From Poems (1908)

Love

Love, whereof purest light the shadow is,
What? shall thy guerdon be the general bliss?
Nay! for thou think'st to gather wealth in vain.
Labour — affliction — death — is all thy gain.
Love, that made Love, this only gift hath given
Of love itself— Heaven in exchange for Heaven.
