Book XV, 17: On the Picture of the Mother of God
Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. V, 1918)
If one would paint thee, O Virgin, he had need of stars rather than of colours, that thou, as the Gate of light, mightst be painted in luminaries. But the stars yield not to the voice of mortals. Therefore thou art delineated and painted by us with the material that nature and the laws of painting afford.
