Love

In imitation of a Song in the Play of Rollo

by Charles Cotton 1630–1687

From Poems on Several Occasions (1689)

Love

Take, O take, my Fears away,
Which thy cold Disdains have bred;
And grant me one auspicious Ray,
From thy Morn of Beauties shed.
But thy killing Beams restrain,
Lest I be by Beauty slain.

Spread, O spread, those orient Twins
Which thy snowy Bosom grace,
Where Love in Milk, and Roses swims,
Blind with Lustre of thy Face.
But let Love thaw them first, left I
Do on those frozen Mountains dye.
