Id. Lib. 11. Ep. 103 — In Lydiam
Translated by Charles Cotton (1689) · From Poems on Several Occasions (1689)
He did not lye, that said, thy Skin was fair,
But not thy Face; so one, and th' other are.
Thy Face, if thou sit'st mute, and hold'st thy peace
Even as in one embost, or Painted is.
But, as thou talk'st, thou loosest off thy Skin
And no ones Tongue more hurts themselves than thine:
Take heed the Aedile thee, nor hear, nor see,
As oft as Statues speak 'tis a Prodigie.
