Epig. de Monsieur Maynard (Come, let's Drink, and drown all Sorrow)
Translated by Charles Cotton (1689) · From Poems on Several Occasions (1689)
Come, let's Drink, and drown all Sorrow,
'Tis what the Time invites us to,
And who knows whether to morrow
Was ordained for us or no!
Death watches us, and when that Slave
Has once enclos'd us in the Grave,
And heaps of Mold upon us hurl'd;
Farewel good Victuals and good Wine;
I read in no Author of mine
Of Taverns in the other World.
