The Mind

XVI. Charity, thou art a lie

by Stephen Crane 1871–1900

From The Black Riders and Other Lines (1895)

The Mind

Charity, thou art a lie,
A toy of women,
A pleasure of certain men.
In the presence of justice,
Lo, the walls of the temple
Are visible
Through thy form of sudden shadows.
