Death & Dying

An Epitaph upon the Heart of Henry the Third, Late King of France and Poland

by Francis Davison c. 1575–c. 1619

From A Poetical Rhapsody (1602), ed. A. H. Bullen (1890–91)

Death & Dying

Whether thy choice or chance thee hither brings,
Stay, passenger, and wail the hap of kings.
This little stone a great king's heart doth hold,
That ruled the fickle French, and Polacks bold:
Whom with a mighty warlike host attended,
With traitorous knife, a cowled monster ended.
So frail are e'en the highest earthly things.
Go, passenger, and wail the hap of Kings!
