CIV. The little Success which attended the personal Ministry of CHRIST.

by Philip Doddridge 1702–1751

From Hymns founded on various Texts in the Holy Scriptures (1755)

Religion

AND doth the Son of GOD complain,
"Lo, I have spent my Strength in vain,
And stretch'd my Hands whole Days and Years
To those, who slight my Words and Tears".

O stubborn Hearts, that could withstand
Such Efforts from a Saviour's Hand!
O gracious Saviour, who would bleed,
When Words and Tears could not succeed!

Fall down, my Soul, in humble Woe,
That thou hast wrong'd his Goodness so:
Now let his Grace resistless move
To melt the stubborn Flint to Love.

All-glorious LORD, march forth and reign,
And reap the Fruit of all thy Pain;
And, till a nobler Scene appear,
Begin the happy Conquest here.
