CCL. PETER's Admonition to SIMON MAGUS.

by Philip Doddridge 1702–1751

From Hymns founded on various Texts in the Holy Scriptures (1755)

Religion

SEARCHER of Hearts, before thy Face
I all my Soul display;
And conscious of its innate Arts
Intreat thy strict Survey.

If lurking in its inmost Folds
I any Sin conceal,
O let a Ray of Light divine
The secret Guile reveal.

If tinctur'd with that odious Gall
Unknowing I remain,
Let Grace, like a pure silver Stream,
Wash out th' accursed Stain.

If in these fatal Fetters bound
A wretched Slave I lie,
Smite off my Chains, and wake my Soul
To Light and Liberty.

To humble Penitence and Pray'r
Be gentle Pity giv'n,
Speak ample Pardon to my Heart,
And seal its Claim to Heav'n.
