Love

A Translation

by William Drummond of Hawthornden 1585–1649

Love

FIerce Robbers were of old
Exil'd the Champian Ground,
From Hamlets chas'd, in Cities kill'd, or bound▪
And only Woods, Caves, Mountaines, did them hold:
But now (when all is sold)
Woods, Mountaines, Caves, to good Men be refuge,
And do the Guiltlesse lodge,
And clad in Purple Gowns
The greatest Theeves command within the Towns.
