Love

A train

by Michael Field 1846–1914 (Bradley) and 1862–1913 (Cooper)

From Underneath the Bough (1898)

Love

A train
That traverses Europe's central plain! —
Thousands of miles through the moulded furrows
Twinkling in sunset; as night grows brown
A Power comes down,
Stretches its wings on the infinite plain,
Strains to the earth: one bows to its reign,
And prays and prays through the thousand furrows
For a heart subdued
To the heart of that infinite solitude.
