My Lady Has a Lovely Rite

by Michael Field 1846–1914 (Bradley) and 1862–1913 (Cooper)

From A Selection from the Poems of Michael Field (1923)

Love

My lady has a lovely rite:
When I am gone
No prayer she saith
As one in fear:
For orison.
Pressing her pillows white
With kisses, just the sacred number.
She turns to slumber;
Adding sometimes thereto a tear
And a quick breath.
