The Mind

Hope

by Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea 1661–1720

From Miscellany Poems, on Several Occasions (1713)

The MindReligion

The Tree of Knowledge, which in Eden prove'd
The Tree of Life, was thence to heaven remov'd:
Hope is the growth of earth, the only plant
Which enter Heaven, or Paradise cou'd want;
Hell knows it not, to us alone confined,
And cordial only to the human mind;
Receive it then to' expel these mortal cares,
Nor waive a med'cine, which thy God prepares.
