Love

On Mrs. Dove, Wife to the Reverend Dr. Henry Dove

by Thomas Flatman 1635–1688

From Poems and Songs (1686)

Love

'Tis thus----and thus farewell to all
Vain mortals do perfection call;
To Beauty, Goodness, Modesty,
Sweet temper, and true Piety.
The rest an Angel's pen must tell:
Long, long, belovèd Dust, farewell.
Those blessings which we highliest prize
Are soonest ravish'd from our eyes.
