Nature

All through the long and dreary night

by Fujiwara no Michitsuna no Haha fl. 947–967

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 53

Nature

All through the long and dreary night
I lie awake and moan;
How desolate my chamber feels,
How weary I have grown
Of being left alone!
