Nature

It is a promise unfulfilled

by Fujiwara no Mototoshi early 12th century

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 75

Nature

It is a promise unfulfilled,
For which I humbly sue;
The dainty little mugwort plant
Relies upon the dew,
And I rely—on you.
