Nature

Gone are my old familiar friends

by Fujiwara no Okikaze alive 911–914

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 34

Nature

Gone are my old familiar friends,
The men I used to know;
Yet still on Takasago beach
The same old pine trees grow,
That I knew long ago.
