Nature

When rowing on the open sea

by Fujiwara no Tadamichi d. 1164

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 76

Nature

When rowing on the open sea,
The waves, all capped with white,
Roll onward, like the fleecy clouds
With their resistless might;
Truly a wondrous sight!
