Love

Whoso hasheesh--the green sweet grain--

by Hafiz c. 1315–1390

Translated by Edna Worthley Underwood (1917) · From Songs of Hafiz (1917)

Love

Whoso hasheesh--the green sweet grain--
Does eat, howe’er so small the part,
Sets thirty joyous nightingales
To making music in his heart.

An atom of the sweet green grain
Sets suns a-blaze in Sufi’s eyes,
And makes thy songs ecstatic strain
Like Simurgs--bird of Paradise.
