Love

See how on the cheeks of the tulip

by Hafiz c. 1315–1390

Translated by Edna Worthley Underwood (1917) · From Songs of Hafiz (1917)

Love

See how on the cheeks of the tulip
The dews of morning shine!
Boy, bring me the wine of joy now,
Quick! Quick! the morning wine!

A throne has been built out of emeralds,
Upon it sits a rose--
Boy, bring me wine that is fiery
Wherein a ruby glows!

See!--the doors of Heaven are open,
It was from there this fragrance came,
From there soon will come my sweetheart,
Unveiled and without shame.
