Love

Ode XLII

by Hafiz c. 1315–1390

Translated by Herman Bicknell (in Persian Literature, 1909) · From Persian Literature (1909), trans. Bicknell

Love

'Tis a deep charm which wakes the lover's flame,
Not ruby lip, nor verdant down its name.

Beauty is not the eye, lock, cheek, and mole;
A thousand subtle points the heart control.
