Nature

The God’s world is so far and wide

by Vítězslav Hálek 1835–1874

Translated by Joseph Štýbr (1920) · From Evening Songs (Večerní písně), trans. Štýbr (1920)

Nature

The God’s world is so far and wide
And goodness in small measure;
By thousands one can count the pains
And very little pleasure.

The heart is ready to redeem
With hundred pains one pleasure—
And the same heart, O God, for love
Will suffer past all measure.
