My whole is but a species of my third

by Frances Ridley Havergal 1836–1879

From Charades and Enigmas

Arts & Sciences

My whole is but a species of my third,
Yet has my third no right to such a name
Unless my first and second form a word,
To which he lays an undisputed claim ;

But if my whole renounce my first and second,
My first indeed he may, but not my whole, be reckoned.
