Ultimus Heroum: OR, To the most learned, and to the right Honourable, Henry, Marquesse of Dorchester.

by Robert Herrick 1591–1674

From Hesperides (1648)

Living

ANd as time past when Cato the Severe
Entred the circumspacious Theater;
In reverence of his person, every one
Stood as he had been turn'd from flesh to stone:
E'ne so my numbers will astonisht be
If but lookt on; struck dead, if scan'd by Thee.
