Living

To an Infant Newly Born

by Sir William Jones 1746–1794

From Lyra Elegantiarum, ed. Frederick Locker (London: E. Moxon, 1867)

Living

On parent's knees, a naked new-born child,
Weeping thou sat'st while all around thee smiled;
So live, that sinking in thy long last sleep.
Calm thou may'st smile, while all around thee weep.
