To Mount Abarim
Translated by Nina Salaman (1924) · From Selected Poems of Jehudah Halevi (Jewish Publication Society, 1924)
Peace be to thee, Mount Abarim!
Peace be to thee on every side!
Within thee is gathered the chosen of mankind,
In thee is the chosen of all sepulchres.
If thou knowest him not, ask thou
Of the Red Sea which was rent apart;
And ask of the bush and ask of the mount—
Ask of Sinai—they shall return answer unto thee:
He that faithfully bore the message of God,
Even though no man of words!
I have vowed an early pilgrimage to thee.
