Sleeper with Heart Awake (rhymed version)
Translated by Nina Salaman (1924) · From Selected Poems of Jehudah Halevi (Jewish Publication Society, 1924)
O Sleeper with heart that waketh,
Burning and tempest-torn,
Go, shake .thee, walk with My radiance
Upon thee borne.
Rise up, ride on and prosper:
A star shall guide thy quest,
Till he that lay down in the dungeon
Reach Sinai's crest.
Let not their soul be joyful
Which talk of Zion's despair,
For there My heart is ever,
And Mine eyes are there.
I reveal Myself and I hide Me,
I am wroth, I restrain the rod;
For who should pity My children
But I, their God?
