Cupid on a Lion
Translated by John Bowring (1830) · From Poetry of the Magyars (1830)
Mythology & Folklore
How the fierce beast the gentle child obeys,
And love's mild power the wildest spirit sways!
Lo! how the baby lifts his kingly hand,
Both earth and heaven submit to his command;
And I, sweet Nice! since I wore thy chain,
Seek to rebel against his rule, in vain.
