Time & Brevity

The Sick Nurse

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Heroic Idyls (1863)

Time & Brevity

My sister went to see her nurse,
Aged, but suffering little worse.
And askt her that which people ask
On meeting : it appeared a task
To answer : with a groan she said,
" Ah, Miss ! you find me welly dead.
My heart tells my last hour is come,
I hear it beat across the room :
What ails it ? sure the deuce is in it,
It won't lie still a single minute ;
Tormenting me so, night and day.
It makes me swear when I might pray ;
Yet (Lord o' mercy !) much I fear.
This heart so bangs, he could not hear."
