The Mind

I Strove with None

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Imaginary Conversations and Poems: A Selection

The MindTime & Brevity

I strove with none, for none was worth my strife.
Nature I loved, and, next to Nature, Art;
I warmed both hands before the fire of Life;
It sinks, and I am ready to depart.

Landor's best-known epigram, written near the end of his long life and often reprinted as “Finis.”
