Death & Dying

On the Tomb of Queen Anne

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Heroic Idyls (1863)

Death & Dying

A queen who snatcht from Marlboro's hand
The bay-girt baton of command
Lies here : and courtiers now malign
The creature whom they call'd divine ;
Yet none among them has denied
That she was sober when she died.
