Time & Brevity

Roses and Thorns

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Lyra Elegantiarum, ed. Frederick Locker (London: E. Moxon, 1867)

Time & Brevity

Why do our joys depart
For cares to seize the heart?
I know not. Nature says,
Obey; and man obeys.
I see, and know not why
Thorns live and roses die.
