Living

When Closes Overhead the Warmer Ray

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Works and Life, ed. Forster, vol. VIII (1876)

Living

When closes overhead the warmer ray,
And love has lived his little life away,
How dull and lingering comes the ancient tale,
How sorrowful the song of nightingale!
At last by weariness, not pain, opprest,
We pant for sleep, and find but broken rest;
A rest unbroken in due order comes,
And friends awake us in their happier homes.
