Honour and Modesty

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Works and Life, ed. Forster, vol. VIII (1876)

Living

When Honour once hath shut the door
Behind him, he returns no more.
Modesty finds, once gone astray,
No forward and no backward way,
Gone every grace that most endears!
Gone, beyond all, the grace of tears!
